From April 28 to May 3, 2025, a group of 20 students and 2 lecturers from the HBO Pedagogy programme embarked on an inspiring study trip to Italy, made possible thanks to support from Erasmus+. The idea for the trip was born out of a series of lectures on the pedagogical vision of Don Luigi Giussani-an approach that deeply resonated with us and stirred the desire to experience it firsthand.
One of the highlights of the trip was our visit to Cooperativa Sociale L’Imprevisto (https://www.imprevisto.net), where we met Silvia Cattarina, the leader of this remarkable community that provides care for young people struggling with addiction and personal crises. Over the past 20 years, hundreds of youth have found new purpose and joy through their time at L’Imprevisto—leaving the community with renewed hope and gratitude for life.
In Prato, we visited Conservatorio San Niccolò (https://sniccolo.it/), an educational institution offering a full range of programmes from preschool to a scientific lyceum. Under the passionate guidance of director Mariella Carlotti, we saw how the pedagogical principles of Giussani can shape education in a truly meaningful way.
Our time in Bologna included a visit to the oldest university in Europe, where we further explored the philosophical and educational legacy of Giussani. These encounters offered us rich insights into an educational vision that integrates intellect, heart, and community.
Beyond the professional and educational aspects, we also immersed ourselves in Italian culture through city trips, local cuisine, and sunshine-filled days. Most memorable, however, were the deep conversations and the sense of connection we shared as a group.
Student reflections:
“It’s so important to broaden your horizons, both personally and professionally. It was eye-opening to engage with different educational philosophies shaped by another culture—and to reflect on what speaks to me in my own pedagogical view.”
“It was an amazing trip! I have no regrets at all. Besides the inspiring education from Silvio and Mariella, I especially appreciated the deep conversations we had as a group. Denominational walls disappeared, and we learned so much from each other and from Italian culture. Beautiful surroundings, beautiful weather, and delicious food 😊”
“A truly meaningful and accessible international experience. Beyond gaining professional knowledge, I would absolutely recommend this for personal development and for strengthening bonds with fellow students and our university!”
This enriching experience was made possible through the support of Erasmus+, which enables international collaboration and professional development. Through this program, we were able to engage in meaningful exchanges, broaden our perspectives, and strengthen our commitment to high-quality, values-driven education. We are grateful for this opportunity and look forward to building on these international connections in the future!
